The literary world especially Bengali literature would suffer from an irreparable loss with the death of eminent novelist Samaresh Majumdar, said Jatiya Press Club President Farida Yasmin.

She made the remarks while addressing a memorial gathering of the  eminent Indian Bengali fiction writer on Saturday.

The programme was arranged by Abishkar Publications at Jahur Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium of the JPC in Dhaka.

She said: "Various aspects of the Bengali culture are reflected in many ways in Samaresh's writings. He spellbound Bengali readers with his novels for decades and I grew up reading those."

"Samaresh Majumdar, the author of countless timeless novels including 'Uttaradhikar', 'Kalbela', 'Kalpurush', has occupied a place of deep love in the hearts of the Bengali speaking people in Bangladesh and Kolkata and different places throughout the world," she added.

Addressing the event, Naem Nizam, the editor of daily Bangladesh Pratidin, said:"He used to write for the daily Bangladesh Pratidin regularly. The novelist frequently visited us whenever he stayed in Dhaka."

"As he was a versatile writer, he will remain immortal in our hearts. Bengali literature will suffer an irreparable loss with the death of the novelist," he added.

Recalling his memory, Naem Nizam further said: "He was a very friendly person and he used to enjoy my company. He even dedicated one of his books to me."

Among others, JPC General Secretary Shyamal Dutta, poet Farid Uddin Dulal, poet Faruq Mahmud and poet Salem Sulehi spoke.

Samaresh's daughter Koyel Majumdar addressed the occasion virtually while poet Shamima Chowdhury resits some portions from his Prothom Jibon Ditiya Jibon novel.
