Today is the 52nd martyrdom anniversary of the great martyr Ruhul Amin. Just 6 days before the final victory, this brave warrior was martyred in the front battle at Rupsa in Khulna on December 10, 1971.

On the occasion of his martyrdom anniversary on Sunday (December 10) at the village house of Shaheed Ruhul Amin Birshrestha Shaheed Md. Various programs have been organized under the initiative of Ruhul Amin Memorial Museum and Upazila Administration.

Ruhul Amin of Bagpanchra (now Shaheed Ruhul Amin Nagar) village of Bagpanchra (now Shaheed Ruhul Amin Nagar) of Deoti Union of Sonaimuri Upazila, once Begumganj Upazila, is one of the 7 who were awarded the title of Bir Shrestha for their heroic contribution in the Great War of Independence. Ruhul Amin was born in Bagpanchra village in 1934. Mother Julekha Khatun and father Mohammad Azahar Patwari. Their family consisted of 3 brothers and 4 sisters.

He started his education at Bagpanchra Government Primary School. Then admitted to Amishapara Farmer High School. In 1951, he started his service life as a Naik in the Navy. He participated in the Great Liberation War in 1971. Ruhul Amin, who was fighting in Sector No. 2 during the Liberation War, was an artificer in the main engine room of the naval warship 'Palash'.

Just six days before the final victory of Bengali, on 10th of December near Khulna Shipyard, this hero was martyred while protecting the Bangladesh warship Palash in the Rupsa river by the shell fired by the Pakistan Air Force. In recognition of his heroic role and great self-sacrifice in the Liberation War, he was awarded the title of Bir Shrestha, the highest state honour.

It should be noted that Bir Shrestha Ruhul Amin has five children including two sons and three daughters. Eldest son Bahar died 25 years ago. His family members are said to be living in Sylhet. Younger son Shaukat Ali (57) and three daughters Nurjahan Begum (66), Rizia Begum (60), Fatema Begum (58). Among them, three girls are living with their husbands and children in the houses allocated by the government in Chittagong.
Everyone in the family is educated and financially well off. The only younger son Shaukat and his wife and daughter live at home in the village of Noakhali.
